Good morning, my dear readers and lovers of jewelry, today in my blog, I will tell you of another incredible success that happened to me with one of the sacred masters of Italian jewelry: Gerardo Sacco.
The occasion was my visit to “Vicenza Oro” last September, of which I already spoke to you and of which I will certainly speak to you again in the future.
The incredible thing is that the meeting took place outside the event, in a shoe store in a rather fun and informal atmosphere. After the presentation, Gerardo invited me to come and see him in his shop in Rome. And it is there, among his splendid artifacts that I truly got to know the most famous Italian goldsmith in the world. Gerardo Sacco is a very gallant and likeable man, but I will tell you more about him. He is very much known for his works and his international awards, but I want to focus on his human side, which is perhaps the thing that has moved me the most in that warm October afternoon in Rome.
The master Gerardo Sacco really seemed to me a splendid, exquisitely humble person, a very nice talker, whose life, his vicissitudes, successes and encounters were so interesting and numerous that he decided to give his biography the title “I am nobody, my long journey between art and life”. Gerardo is a man of great class from the south of Italy, very welcoming and extremely generous like many people from the south of Italy are.
Reading his biography, as I did, or simply with a search on the internet, by typing his name on Google, you will find endless information about his work and his innumerable national and international awards.
His success, however, comes from very distant origins and a rather troubled family history.
He was forced to interrupt his studies, and by passing through manual labor at his uncle barber’s shop he had chance meeting with a goldsmith. The passion for art, the innate creativity and the desire to express his potential pushed him to go to learn the art of the goldsmith in Vicenza.
Talking about his life would be still too long, I only dwell on the encounter between Gerardo and his never forgotten wife Anna, whose memory is always present in his life and in his work, thanks also to their three beautiful children, who today help him in the Gerardo Sacco brand.
Gerardo Sacco has a very big following and did numerous international productions, creating jewelry designed for this scene or for that actress, revolutionizing in this way the idea of using jewelry on film sets. Zeffirelli himself declared this: “I confess with pleasant candor that the works of Gerardo helped me to understand on stage they are never reduced to an irrelevant detail.”
His work in his first years of activity started around the world, earning success and recognition everywhere, without ever distorting his nature as a simple, serious, sober man, a man who has always considered the affection of his family his point of reference in his life and work.
The strong connection with his land of origin was another central point in his work. In his latest collection, Gerardo draws inspiration from the socio-cultural heritage of his land. In his works he demonstrates his profound knowledge of the culture and history of the southern goldsmith art that has its roots in the admirable expertise of the Greek goldsmiths, with successive Arab influences. He rightly considers himself an ambassador of this goldsmith culture with the firm will to bring these masterpieces to everyone’s knowledge.
Rings, earrings, necklaces with marvelous masks, made of gold, silver and precious stones inspired by the Greco-Roman tradition, like the mask of Gorgone. Beautiful coins, like that of the emperor Charles V, they inspire bracelets and rings, colored cameos that look to the past, but tremendously current even with technical solutions that look decisively to the future.
Gerardo in his latest collection has proposed, for example the jewel “Mesi Reverse” or revolving, on one side a precious stone and the goldsmith engraving, in a combination of colors, in gold and silver to represent the different seasons and different stones.
His latest collection is proving to be a huge success all over Italy and Gerardo intends to open stores in the most important Italian cities.
The afternoon spent with Gerardo was a really exciting experience and I am very happy that I had the honor and the pleasure of wearing many of his creations that I have photographed for you. Gerardo, always a great gentleman, then gave me his favorite ring, which I am sure will be one of my dearest travel companions, but the real fortune is to have met a great man, one of the few that can still be called a “master” of the Italian goldsmith’s art.
Dear friends, I invite you with all my heart to go and appreciate the small masterpieces created by Gerardo Sacco in his Roman boutique in Via Margutta 84. You will be welcomed by his exquisite collaborators as if in a welcoming home of our beloved south of Italy.
